Surprisingly, these decorative pieces had a practical use too! By making the surface bumpy, it becomes easier to grip. These works of art show animals, flowers, parts of nature, or personal symbols that will be important to the future owner of the sword. These are small, ornate symbols and sculptures stuck on top of the ray-skin Menuki, right above the wrapping.
